The Summer School organised within the SONATA Twinning project brought together 29 students from seven countries at BioSense Institute, providing them with an opportunity to expand their knowledge of soil science, sustainable agriculture and the application of advanced digital technologies.

The first part of the programme featured expert lectures and an interactive role-playing exercise that encouraged participants to explore different challenges from the perspective of local stakeholders. This approach enabled them to gain a better understanding of the importance of involving end-users in research and innovation processes.

Particular attention was devoted to the initial steps involved in establishing a Living Lab. Working in teams, the students explored effective ways to engage with end-users, formulate relevant questions and communicate research results clearly and meaningfully.

The programme also included lectures on current topics in soil science and digital technologies, ranging from metagenomics, soil sampling and modelling to geoinformatics and cloud computing. Participants also explored the economic dimensions of sustainability, including the role of banking and green credits in supporting sustainable practices.

During the remainder of the programme, students applied their newly acquired knowledge through hands-on exercises and team presentations, where they shared their ideas and exchanged experience with fellow participants and lecturers.

The SONATA Summer School contributed to connecting young researchers from different countries and disciplines, while encouraging the development of innovative approaches to sustainable agriculture and improved soil health.
